Our World Irish Aid Awards 2014 Regional Finals
Top 60 Schools chosen from hundreds of entries for regional showcase
Monday 19th May - The regional finals of the 2014 Our World Irish Aid Awards were launched today.
Some 60 primary schools from across the country have been selected from hundreds of entries to showcase their projects in four regional finals ahead of the national final in June.
The four regional events will take place in Sligo today (May 19th), Dublin tomorrow (May 20th), Limerick on Wednesday May 21st and Cork on Thursday May 22nd.
The Our World Irish Aid Awards were launched in 2005 to increase primary pupils’ awareness and understanding of global development issues. They are designed to inform pupils about the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) and the work of Irish Aid, and to help them explore the links between their lives and the lives of children in developing countries.
Projects feature the realities of life for children and their families in Malawi, Ghana, Cambodia, Tanzania and many other countries. Pupils have used a variety of creative methods to communicate what they have learnt including illustrated project books, film, artwork, music, board games and interactive websites. They have also presented their projects to others in their wider school and local communities.
A total of 60 projects have been selected for the regional finals from hundreds of entries from schools all over Ireland.
The Millennium Development Goals include eliminating hunger, promoting gender equality and achieving universal primary education. The leaders of 189 signatory nations have agreed to try to achieve the eight goals by the year 2015. This year’s Our World Awards theme ‘A Better Future for All the World’s Children’ relates to all the MDGs, and enables children to explore all aspects of Irish Aid’s overseas work.
Twelve schools from the regional finals will go forward to the national finals to be held in Dublin Castle on Tuesday June 17th. . Each school at the national finals will get a special trophy in recognition of their hard work and the winning school will take home the Our World Irish Aid Awards overall winner’s trophy.
