2013 witnessed a clear reaffirmation of Irish Aid’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment with the launch of Ireland’s Policy for International Development, One World, One Future. The new Policy recognises that gender equality is a key element of democratic accountability and that women are important agents of change, underlining the need to support and strengthen their voices in decision-making at all levels.
Ireland advocated strongly on gender equality issues across a range of multilateral fora during 2013, for example through our membership of the Human Rights Council and through our Presidency of the Council of the European Union. 2013 also saw significant progress being made through Irish Aid’s programming in its Key Partner Countries, including: ensuring more equal access to quality education and health services, preventing and responding to incidences of Gender Based Violence and promoting the economic and political empowerment of women and girls.
