Water point (Handpump) constructed by UNHCR partners in Kutapalong refugee camp, Bangladesh

WaSH or Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, is a hugely critical component of any Emergency. This includes the supply of Washing, cooking and Drinking water, Family Toilets, Soap and other items for personal hygiene, and control of rubbish generated within the camps.

In Kutapalong camp in Bangladesh, the WASH unit of UNHCR assists in providing WASH for more than 400,000 Refugees and the support of Irish Aid in providing expertise, has allowed a faster and more targeted response during the formative months which are the most critical of any response.

The area has been a real challenge, as it is former National park land consisting of only hills and valleys with zero infrastructure and is still inhabited by wild Elephants which create their own challenges for us.

We were able to mobilise partners to Drill boreholes to access clean ground water even during the dry season, to enable refugees to collect sufficient volume of water for their individual families, and also to provide Emergency Sanitation facilities initially, which are now being phased out and replaced by more semi-permanent and sustainable structures.
