Tánaiste announces €23m in additional support for Ukraine and Moldova

The Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin T.D., has announced a further €23 million in humanitarian and institutional support for Ukraine and Moldova.

Today’s announcement brings to over €210 million Ireland’s support for the Ukrainian people since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The Tánaiste said:

“Ireland has been unequivocal and steadfast in our support for the people of Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion. This additional package of €23 million will provide much-needed humanitarian support and assistance to people suffering the impacts of this unjust war.

“Ireland has provided over €210 million in support to Ukraine since the outset of the war. Our support for Ukraine is unwavering. Ireland will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine for as long as necessary.”

The Tánaiste made the announcement while attending the UN General Assembly in New York.

The €210 million provided by Ireland since February 2022 includes peace and humanitarian support, in addition to €122 million in non-lethal military assistance via the European Peace Facility.

The €23 million announced today will include funding to trusted partners such as UNHCR, UNFPA, the World Health Organisation, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the World Bank, the OECD, Irish NGOs and President Zelenskyy’s “Grain from Ukraine” initiative.

The €23 million will be allocated as follows:

• €8 million to support World Bank development and relief programmes in Ukraine and Moldova.
• €3 million to UNHCR to support their work in protection, including housing and shelter and psychosocial support.
• €1.5 million to UNHCR to for the construction of prefabricated homes to support communities devastated by the war.
• €4 million to ICRC for the continued provision of food, safe drinking water and cash assistance.
• €2 million to “Grain from Ukraine” through the World Food Programme enabling the delivery of Ukrainian grain to countries in Africa and Asia facing malnutrition and food insecurity.
• €1.5 million to UNFPA to support of their work to protect women and girls in emergencies, and prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.
• €1.5 million to the WHO for its emergency response to health needs in Ukraine.
• €1 million to Irish NGOs through a call commencing in October with a focus on capacity building to local institutions.
• €0.5 million to the OECD Ukraine Country programme to deliver effective public administration, rule of law and environmental protection, and in support of Ukraine’s EU and OECD accession ambitions.
